If It Is Advertised, It Is Not Food

By Mark O’Brien

“The real food is not being advertised. And that’s really all you need to know.”

In an interview with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now! Michael Pollan states that as a rule of thumb, if a food is advertised then it is not really food, that industrial food production is much more about ‘industrial’ than the ‘food’.

He goes on to say that if a food has more than 5 ingredients it should also be avoided.

Real food goes off if not eaten soon, and also varies in quality and taste.

Both of these factors mean that if food is to be standardised in terms of taste, colour, texture, and if it is to be stored on shelves for a long time, then its very nature must be changed, and it is no longer what we have become used to calling food.

Swine Flu

Swine flu seems to have arisen from industrial pig farms, where pigs live in a state of constant filth, pumped full of antibiotics, they even have their tails snipped to stop the pigs sucking on each others tails.

Of course the media scare does not mention our industrial food factories which are ultimately petrie dishes for all kinds of viruses and bacteria to mutate.

Monsanto and GE crops

The US Union of Concerned Scientists has just issued a report stating that far from GE crops increasing productivity and being more ‘sustainable’ as companies like Monsanto like to claim, there are very few instances over the past 20 years where this has been the case. See
