Fast Food Linked To Alzheimers

Research published in November 2008 by researchers at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute shows how a diet rich in sugar, cholesterol and fat increases the risk of Alzheimers in mice and could do the same in humans.

Alzheimer’s results from brain tangles that produce plaques, and current pharmacological research is dealing with removing clumps of proteins.

Researches are now looking at preventing this build up, and this research conducted on mice indicates that reducing the intake of fat and cholesterol decreases the production of a protein called apoE4 which is a known risk factor for Alzheimer’s.

In the research on mice fed junk food for 9 months the mice developed similar brain tangles as those associated with dementia.

Again it appears our society’s addiction to fast food to coming home to roost. And this research reminds us that the best thing we can do for our long term health is to eat well.

This research may not be totally conclusive, as the mice were only fed fast food, and for a period of nine months, most of their normal life span. Fast food eaten as an exception in an otherwise healthy diet may not produce these results.
