Drink Spiking Alive And Well In Bali
By Mark O’Brien
I was recently speaking with a friend who has been living in Bali for many years and she told me a story about drink spiking alive and well in Bali that shocked me.
She was at a bar with some friends, and she was introduced to an Indonesian man. He was very friendly and offered to buy her a drink which she refused, but ordered one herself.
When her drink came she had a sip and put it down.
She noticed there was something odd about it, and immediately she grabbed her bag and raced for the door.
Hailing a cab, she said she was completely blind by the time she sat inside.
She told the driver where to go and promptly vomited in the cab.
When she arrived back at her lodgings, she was helped to her room by the people who worked there who knew her well.
They put her on the her bed, and told her that her boyfriend had gone to get some water for her.
‘What boyfriend?’ she asked. “The man in the cab with you who helped bring you inside” she was told. Then it hit her.
The guy from the bar had spiked her drink somehow, with something very strong as she had only had a very small sip (and she is a big strong girl who knows how to handle her booze), and had gotten into her cab unbeknownst to her, and had somehow convinced the staff that he was her boyfriend.
“NO” she screamed. “Get him out of here, he is not my boyfriend”. Which they promptly did and left her in bed with one guy she trusted to keep watch.
She vomited through the night, finally sleeping, and woke up with a really bad hangover but with full vision. After 2-3 days she felt normal again.
Clearly drink spiking is an issue, and it seems like the drugs that rare used are not soft drugs that may make you more amenable, but rather incapacitate completely.
Best to not leave drinks unattended, take to the toilet with you if necessary.
Not every person wants to drug you, but it is worth being careful.

The sad thing this is not only happening at a night club but also for taking freight and belongings from female bus passengers traveling alone. It is becoming a dilemma in Indonesia because in our culture is considered impolite to refuse refreshments offered politely so sometimes to show respect, even though a bit nervous, we still drink it anyway.
